The first time I ever saw a bald woman was when pop singer Sinead O'Conner shaved her head back in the late 80's. I didn't think the look was that bad but it took awhile for me to get used to. Then when actress Natalie Portman shaved her head for the movie "V for Vendetta" it further cemented in my mind that it wasn't that bad of a look for a woman.

But when your wife has to endure chemo treatments and starts to loose her hair from those treatments it takes on a very personal nature.

I had seen men in my neighborhood and church shave their heads as a sign of support for their wives that were going through chemo so I had made up my mind that when my wife had to shave her head I would be right there with her.

When the time came to buzz I was very nervous as I had never had hair that short. I was a child of the 70's and 80's when big hair and mullets ruled the land. But I went first to help get our four children used to the look so when it was her turn there was as little shock as possible.

I notice more and more people showing this kind of support with cancer. Recently some members of the Chicago Bears football team shaved their heads in support of a 6-year-old boy who was battling cancer.

Over two years have gone by since I shaved my head and I have not looked back. It will be a forever reminder of supporting my wife and I will keep this hair-do as a badge of honor. My wife opted not to keep the "O'Conner" look and it has come back darker and more beautiful than ever but she has mentioned to me many times how much better I look...which is nice!
